In March of 1999 my coach John Saylor and I made our first trip up I-75 headed for Kerry Roop’s SuperKicks gym so that I could compete in a grappling match. Mr Roop held these events every other month and catered to grapplers, boxers, kickboxers, and even ‘’No Holds Barred'’ fighters. Further dating the event was my opponents outfit, he wore a gi, I did not, they were actually optional back then, ha! Royce Gracie was even there with my opponent’s entourage, probably in town doing a seminar, and though he was very kind and approachable he was not swamped with autograph seekers, and probably didn’t charge for his appearance. After my first trip up north for ‘’Fight Night in the Hills'’ I would visit again often for competition. Over the next five years that I fought these smokers at SuperKicks I watched many othe up and coming fighters on the same cards. Guys like Jason Ireland, Brenden Seguin, Angelo Popovski and many more fought in Roop’s gym long before they ever set foot in a cage or ring as featured pay-per-view athletes. Last Friday I made the trip up north for the first time in many years, only instead of getting off at the Rochester Rd. exit we stayed on the interstate for the exit labeled ‘’The Palace at Auburn Hills'’. Sitting backstage in this huge arena I reflected on all the years of training and fighting. Judging by the box of VHS cassettes next to me I must have fought in Rochester around 20 times. It has been years since I entered the cage in shorts but I have found that going in for just a minute at a time with latex gloves can be every bit as satisfying. Even though I spent Friday night taping hands instead of jumping rope and yelling instead of fighting I was very proud and gratious. I am humbled by how fortunate I am to have been involved in ‘’MMA'’ since years before such a thing existed. I am grateful that we now have a much more palatable title than ‘’No Holds Barred'’ (anyone remember the movie with the Hulkster and ‘’Tiny'’ Zeus Lester). I am blessed by the people who have come and gone in my life that supported, coached, fought, trained, and developed with me over the years. I thank John Saylor for instilling in me a belief that achievement is the reward for hard work, Jon Shores for reminding me to ‘’never be a sissy'’ (quote modified to exclude profanity), Brad Urwin my first full time training partner alongside him I made more progress as an athlete than any other period in my carreer, and everyone else who sweat, bled, cried and tried with me over the years! Special thanks to my athletes for training hard, staying the course, getting W’s, and reppin’ The Fight Farm. Congrats to Cody on a win well deserved, youre work ethic embodies what I want my athletes and program to stand for! Stay tuned because I plan on Chapter 2 telling the story of having our own locker backstage at a casino and how the Nevada Athletic Commission allows 3 corners in title fights
