The Shingitai Warrior Games

June 21st, 2008
by JP Pocock

warrior games rework.jpg

On Saturday, June 14th we hosted our first ever Shingitai Warrior Games. The Games were a a throwback of a special pentathlon that used to be held for Shingitai Competitors as preparation for fights. Back then we used to have only 5 events and only Shingitai club members could compete, but now we will be hosting The Warrior Games throughout the year and it is open to everyone. For our first Warrior Games we had a total of 6 events held in the following order:

  1. Pullups for max number of repetitions
  2. 40lb Medicine Ball push press toss for distance (think 40lb basketball jump shot)
  3. 40lb Medicine Ball 7 ft underhand toss max number of repetitions in 2 minutes (really challenging, lots of hustle)
  4. 70 lb Kettlebell Farmer’s Walk up the driveway at The Barn of Truth (only half of our competitors could even finish this event)
  5. Standing long jump for distance
  6. Inclined Sit-ups for max number of repetitions
Congratulations to our Division Winners!
Lightweight Division: Brandon Heffelfinger
Middleweight Division: Derek Fry
Heavyweight Division: Justin Black

We will be hosting the 2nd Shingitai Warrior Games this summer on September 20, mark your calendars now so that you don’t miss it. We will be using the same events as are listed above and if the weather permits we will follow the same order. If you have any questions please contact John Saylor @ (419)938-6089

CODY ‘’THE WOLVERINE'’ STEVENS WINS PAN-ASIAN GRAPPLING CHAMPIONSHIPS!

May 9th, 2008
by JP Pocock
cody4.JPG

Cody has been training really hard here in Thailand and I knew that under 70kg it was going to take a lot for someone to beat him. Cody’s skills are sharp, his strength and conditioning are top notch, and his fighting spirit is strong. Though I knew he would be hard to beat, I did not know that he would be unbeatable. Despite my confidence in his abilities I never would have guessed that Cody would go all day without even giving up a point. The Wolverine was able to submit his way to the finals in his weight class, where he won by points. Still feeling frisky Cody entered the Absolute as well (despite competing in the lightweight division earlier) and won his way to the finals again by submissions. In the finals Cody was paired with a team member and gracefully conceded the match. So the weekend was a great success for Cody, he won his division, and medaled in the Absolute. Cody is now back here at Tiger training for his fight in June at Fight Night in the Flats. I expect him to be as successful there as he was in Manilla last weekend. Keep posted to the site for more photos and videos of Cody’s matches, see more about the Pan-Asian Games here and read more about it here..

THE COLORADO STAIRMASTER

March 25th, 2008
by JP Pocock

As many of you know I am taking a 8 week trip to Thailand to train at Tiger Muay Thai. Before heading off to Thailand Britt (my wife) and I had to come here to Colorado to drop our pit bull, Azul, and then we will fly out of Denver. One of my favorite things to do whenever I come here to visit is The Colorado Stairmaster known to locals as the incline. This set of stairs is so long that you can see it from many miles away. It looks like a huge scar running up the mountain from a distance. It is so high and steep that from the bottom you can’t see the top! I climb the incline every time I come here to visit, unfortunately I don’t come here often enough to have acquired any proficiency in it yet, so it still kills me every time. It took me about 55 minutes to get to the top, and I had to take 3 breaks in spite of my goal to make it without stopping. Azul had to stop off at the half way point and could not make it to the top, I think the altitude was too much for him.

MANSFIELD MAYHEM: MARCH 22

March 23rd, 2008
by JP Pocock

The Fight Farm had a GREAT night of fights last Saturday at Mansfield Mayhem. We had 3 fights on a card of just 11 so we were more than a quarter of the show alone.

Fighting first for the night was Nick Jones, Nick has been with us now less than a year but has trained really hard and made an enormous amount of improvement since he first joined the team. Nick did a great job of fighting smart, he landed some good straight punches in the opening of the first and stayed busy working attacks from rubber-guard after conceding a takedown. He also did a great job of controlling both the action and the distance from his back and was able to oustrike his opponent from guard. Nick was in great shape and pushed a pace that his opponent could not keep up with and at the end of round one his opponent decided ‘’No mas'’ and refused to answer the bell. Nick was declared the winner by TKO.

Next up on the card was Hank Webb. This was Hank’s 2nd outing at a Mayhem show but his first fight since joining our crew. Since he joined we have worked hard on both his conditioning and his ground game, and his training partner Justin Black has also invested lots of extra time in him outside of regular practice. All of the extra work paid off, Hank dominated the stand-up early but made a mistake and gave his back in a transition on the floor. Hank kept his composure and managed to face up to his opponent after fighting off the choke and now in top position guard looked to finish strong and take back the round. Hank postured up and rained down big punches until the bell called him off at the end of the round. It was quite a reversal and in my eyes he stole the round, not that it mattered because his round ending performance had been so overwhelming that his opponent also quit, and we had our 2nd win of the night via TKO after round 1.

In the co-main event we had 145 lb fighter JP Jaranowski fighting, the catch was that as usual there were no 145 lb opponents for him. Again we were forced to bump him up into the 155 lb division to fight. His opponent had won his previous fight with a viscous knock out via right hand so we spent a lot of time on movement and avoiding that same right hand. As far the stand-up portion of the fight went, JP could have won it without even throwing a punch, his head movement was so sharp that he made his opponent look terrible missing haymaker after haymaker. Eventually the fighters would clinch and JP found himself on the wrong end of a guillotine choke for quite a while. He kept his cool and like Hank earlier in the night reversed the position with fury. JP escaped the guillotine, fought to his feet and unloaded heavy straight punches until he dropped the guy, added a few more for good measure and then the referee stepped in sparing JP’s opponent any further punishment.

so there you have it, 3 fights, 3 wins via TKO, a great night. I am very proud of my guys for fighting hard and showing such class in their victories.
